The Camp Erhorn Hut, make sure you bring insect repellent!

Friends of Scouting Program:

  • The current Friends of Scouting Program has not been well supported by our Troop.  Please try to support this program as it is a key to the Troop earning the "Quality Unit" Patch for 2012.  Right now we are enrolled at about 20% and it will take at least 50% to qualify.
  • Please hand in your contribution to Mr. Louis at this Friday's meeting (4/13), all contributions are Tax Deductible.

 Makahiki 2012:

  • The Makahiki is right around the corner on April 28th!  Last year we won first place in two of the three competitions held Council wide!  We didn't win the overall because no one told us we needed to bring cooking equipment so we didn't enter that competition.
  • Event 1 – Balloon Obstacle Course Competition

Competition: Each Troop team navigates through the obstacle course with a balloon and the Troop team that gets to the finish line with an intact balloon wins. Each winner will continue to advance to the final competition to determine the overall winner.

Equalizer: Each Troop is limited to one team of 2 scouts with a Boy Scout rank limit of up to First Class.
Troop Equipment: None

  • Event 2 – Knot Tying Sled Race

Competition: Each team must tie a series of ropes together with the approved knots and attach the ropes to a sled. A team member must ride in the sled and the other 2 team members will pull him to the finish line, if the rider falls out of the sled, the team must go back to the starting line to start pulling the sled, if the knots do not hold, the team must stop and retie the knots. The first team to correctly tie the knots and pull the sled with rider to the finish line without the rider falling out wins the competition.

Equalizer: Each Troop is limited to 3 Boy Scouts with a total weight limit of 400 lbs of Boy Scouts and must have the following Boy Scout ranks as part of each team;

1 Boy Scout with a rank up to 2nd Class

1 Boy Scout with a rank of 2nd Class or 1st Class

1 Boy Scout with a rank up to Life Scout

Total weight limit of the 3 Boy Scouts up to 400 lbs.

Troop Equipment: None Required

  • Event 3 – Orienteering Course

Competition: This event will have each Troop team compete in an orienteering course over the entire park, looking for clues that they must bring back to the starting point in the fastest time possible.

Equalizer: Each Troop is limited to one team of 2 scouts with a Boy Scout rank limit of up to Life.

Troop Equipment: Compass.
Scoring: The 1st team to the finish line and presents the correct clues wins the completion and receives 1 point, each subsequent team will obtain the corresponding points in order of their finish.

Competition Tiebreaker

If Troop teams are tied for 1st place at the end of the 3 competition events, there will be a tie- breaker event to determine the 2011 Makahiki Competition Champ
Equalizer Note: You do not need to have the same Boy Scouts do all 3 competitions, you can vary the team members for the competitions.

  • Reminder: turn in Makahiki Ticket Money to Mr. Kitamura (Chris' Dad)

Before we leave the month of September where we discussed the meaning of "Thrifty" and we head into October to think about the meaning of being "Brave" we should take a moment to remember once again the events of 9/11 where ordinary people discovered what being brave really meant.

This is a video of the "Boatlift" from 9/11.  We need to realize that all of us can make a difference when the opportunity arises.  A quote from a New York Boat Captain: "I have one theory in life, I never want to say the words I SHOULD HAVE, if I do it and I fail, I tried..if I do it and I succeed, better for me, and I tell my children the same thing, never go through life saying YOU SHOULD HAVE, if you want to do something, you do it."

The Scouts and Families of Troop 33 turned out in great numbers this past weekend for Aric Leong's Eagle Leadership Project!   The work involved cutting down dense undergrowth on the "Island" in Kaaawa Valley, repairing two access bridges, cutting the existing Hau Brush Canopy and repairing an existing stairway.

Troop_33_gang
The entire process was complicated with the simultaneous ILH Cross Country Meet in the Valley above but the Troop 33 forces proved once again to be unrelenting and put forth an incredible effort on both Saturday and Sunday.  The volunteers that stayed on Sunday were treated to a bus tour of the Valley and all of the Movie Sites.

Every so often you will have a chance encounter that truly reinforces your core beliefs as a Scouter.  This real life "tale" of trustworthiness is what I witnessed today and would like to share with all of you.

After leaving my wife at the check out stand at Marukai I took my son Aaron outside to browse the bargain bins.  There were quite a few interesting things out there and it seemed like a nice way to spend a few minutes on a warm Sunday afternoon.  On our last go around at the final set of display bins we were walking to the sidewalk's edge when an elderly gentleman rushed to pick up something on the sidewalk in front of us.  The man muttered something under his breath that sounded like, "someone must have lost this!" and when he stood up he was holding a crisp $100 bill in his hand, nicely folded in thirds.

He rushed off to the entry where a security guard was stationed and I could hear the guard direct him to the customer service window where you renew your Marukai memberships every year.  On his way to the customer service window he motioned to his wife, who was sitting in a white sedan parked in front of us, that he was going to return what he found and to wait for him.

His wife got out of the car, being that it was getting warm, and we greeted each other.  I started the conversation by saying, "It is really a nice thing that he's doing, showing true honesty by returning that $100 bill!".  She replied, "I remember finding money at Times Supermarket once and returned it, although it was only $7, but eventually they called me saying that no one claimed it and told me to come get it!"  I told her, "Well, just the same, it's very nice to meet good and honest people,  I'm going to tell my Boy Scout Troop all about this when I see them next".

She looked at me and said, "How nice, my grandsons are Boy Scouts too!  They just came back from a week long summer camp on the North Shore!"  I said, "Really?, our Troop was just there too!"  She looked at me and asked me what Troop I was with to which I proudly replied, "Troop 33, from Manoa..I'm the Scoutmaster".  The Lady brightened up and said, "That's my grandsons' Troop!..my grandsons are Wil and Ben Tottori!"

When the man came back from returning the $100 we all had a chance to introduce ourselves and then we went on our way.  A brief visit to Marukai turned a chance enounter into a true demonstration of Good Citizenship made all the sweeter by having the Good Samaritans being linked to our Troop.   I drove off with a smile on my face thinking that Hawaii is a really small place but at times like today, it is a really GOOD place!

One of Troop 33's most popular scouts with other Troops and Instructors is Ben Tottori.  Although tiny in stature Ben was simply amazing in his ability to make friends in Camp.  Ben accomplished an unheard of NRA shooting qualification score by using only his FIRST 10 rounds of his allowed 20 rounds in his VERY FIRST time shooting a real rifle!!  Typically a scout will take several days of 20 round attempts to do this.

This is Patrick Lum Swimming the Aquatic Leg of the Golden Outrigger Challenge.  This was the third leg following Archery (Zack Kim) and Knots (Tyler Nishikawa).  The baton, an empty water bottle contained the certificates from the previous legs and a book of matches for the final firemaking segment.  Patrick had to swim with the bottle the entire way!

5 of the 7 total Awards given at Camp went to Troop 33!

Summer Camp 2011 @ Camp Pupukea was a great experience for our Scouts!  The Troop earned a record number of merit badges and rank advancements, 5 mile swim awards, 1 Kayaking certification, 5 Basic Leader Training Certifications, 4 Outdoor Leader Training Certifications and that was all before Thursday's Golden Outrigger Competition.

The boys were led by acting Senior Patrol Leader, Zak Kim and Asst. Senior Patrol Leader, Jarrett Okita.  Because of their capable and creative leadership skills the boys surpassed the expectations of the Scoutmasters given that the majority of these boys were attending their very first summer camp!

Troop 33's scouts earned the Honor Troop Award, one of only two given out at Camp this Session!   The boys and leaders had to maintain a high standard of achievement and service throughout the week to earn this.  Typical of Troop 33 all catagories were met or exceeded and the boys worked as a cohesive unit.  Beginning on Monday evening the youngest of the boys won the Hokiu "Knot Off" event by coming from behind to win big by tying over 30 sheep shanks (more than 10 more than the closest competitor).

The excitement really began on Wednesday night with the Cobbler Cook Off where Troop 33 presented their entry complete with Candlelabra and matching Hawaiian Print napkins and table cloth!  This is only one of two events in which Troop 33 did not win first place but the results were still as yummy as ever!

Scoutmaster Tim Leong also entered the Scoutmaster Dance-Off and rendered a fiddle variation of "The Orange Blossom Special" reworked as "The Kahuku Cannonball Express".  Participation in this event insured that the Troop had at least one scoutmaster that earned the "Scoutmaster Merit Badge", a requirement for the "Honor Troop Award".  The competition was a Jitterbugging Couple from San Diego but Scoutmaster Tim ended up taking the competition by implementing a timely insertion of the "Curly Shuffle" on the concrete floor.  Needless to say that the competition for this event was "intense"!

The cornerstone event was Thursday's "Golden Outrigger Challenge" where every Troop competed directly against each other by demonstrating mastery of many scout skills against the clock.  Senior Patrol Leader Zak Kim orchestrated the event brilliantly and utilized both senior and younger scouts to full advantage!  The events were staffed as follows:

  • Archery - Zak Kim (runner Aric Leong)
  • Knots - Tyler Nishikawa
  • Swimming - Patrick Lum
  • Sandwich Making & Eating - Aaron Nonaka (runner Daniel Kim)
  • Plant Identification - Josh Terakubo
  • Art - Evan Uyeno
  • Firemaking - TROOP 33

Each event was masterfully executed and the runners were as swift as the Manoa breeze!  The big finale was the firemaking event where the object was to completely burn a string set at 2 feet off the ground with available (but wet) wood in the surrounding area.  The entire troop created the fire that sent a giant smoke cloud into the air followed by a cheer that resonated all the way to Manoa Valley!  It was later revealed that our troop barely lost to the time established by the Staff that had already done this event 4 previous times; the difference was only 3 minutes!!  The boys celebrated well into the night with soft drinks and doughnut holes.

The Scouts of Troop 33 at the Closing Fire Bowl Ceremonies

The Scouts of Troop 33 learned and demonstrated teamwork that is the cornerstone of scouting.  The excellence of our Troop's program springs from the dedication and hard work by the Troop Committee, Troop Leaders and the Scouts.  With your direct and active participation we can continue our Troop's legacy for generations to come.  Please Kokua by volunteering for our many activities (Popcorn Fundraising, Makahiki Ticket Sales, Activity Shirts & Neckerchiefs, Troop Committee and Scoutmaster Team).  It is through your participation that our Troop can continue on a path of excellence!
